Robbrecht en Daem

An Architectural Anthology

Founded in 1975, the Robbrecht en Daem architectural firm has built an extensive and impressive portfolio – architecture and infrastructure projects, interiors and landscapes – in Belgium and across Europe. What links the diverse projects designed by Paul Robbrecht (b. 1950), Hilde Daem (b. 1950), and Johannes Robbrecht (b. 1977) is the way in which their architectural designs are interwoven with contemporary visual arts. This handsome publication focuses on the architects and their various collaborations with artists, including Juan Munoz and Isa Genzken, their dialogic approach with regard to the "old masters" of architecture such as Mies van der Rohe, Henry Van de Velde, and their attention to the human presence in their buildings. Drawing on new textual and visual material, this lavishly illustrated book shows a wide selection of sixty-three projects, and features the writing of a number of acclaimed historians and critics as well as photography by Attilio Maranzano, Walter Vorjohann, Maarten Venden Abeele, among others.
