Drawings in Dialogue: Old Master Through Modern

The Harry B. and Bessie K. Braude Memorial Collection

Dorothy Braude Edinburg has amassed one of the most important private collections of drawings in the United States. This book celebrates a gift of 240 drawings that she is making to the Art Institute of Chicago. Many of the 166 works selected for this book are well known, while others have never before been published. All will be illustrated in full colour and accompanied by detailed and engaging texts. The book also includes an introduction that traces the collection's history, provides an overview of its significance, and details its relationship to the Art Institute's stellar holdings of works on paper. Among the many beautiful and important drawings, featured here are works by European and British artists Boucher, Watteau, Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Monet, Renoir, Blake, Gainsborough, Hogarth, and Turner. Particularly strong are early twentieth-century examples by Braque, Kandinsky, Klee, Miro, Modigliani, and Mondrian, as well as numerous key works by Matisse and Picasso. Distinguished drawings by American artists, such as Bellows and Gorky, complete the impressive survey.
